Biff Lures
Biff Baits
Milwaukee, WI
1920s
Biff Baits was a fairly small company out of Milwaukee, WI and their lures can be somewhat hard to find due to the relatively short time of operation for the company. Starting in the mid-1920s, Biff Baits basically had three types of lures which include the Biff Plugs, the Spiral Spinners, and the Surface Wobblers.
Biff had some very catchy slogans such as “Biff goes that sassy bassy bait”, “Will fool the college bred fish” and “You have tried the rest, now buy the best”. All the Biff Baits came in picture boxes and many of them were labeled with the color of the lure inside.
The Spiral Spinners came in several different sizes and 3 different materials (aluminum, nickel and brass), although not all materials were available in all the sizes. Many of these Spiral Spinners were marked with the patent date of 1925 and the Biff Bait Co name.
The Surface Wobblers came in several different variations, including a single and double wobbler and a Godevil Biff that was a style that had no blade for spinning. These lures appear to be the least common of the Biff lures and the boxes can be especially tough to find.
The Biff Plugs came in two sizes, the smaller Whoopee Biff Plug and the Master Biff Plug. There have been some large “musky” sizes reportedly found, but these have not been 100% confirmed to be Biff Baits…although they appear to be. These plugs had holes in the cupped front of the lure that run all the way through the sides. These holes helped the lure to wobble at slow retrieve speeds.
I am declaring June "Biff Month" as my nephew “Biff” graduated from High School this month.
So, for the first time...the “Lure of the Month” is actually a group of lures made by one manufacturer...Biff Baits.
Can you name all the "famous Biffs" below????
