Moore’s Yellow Plug
H.C. Moore
Ypsilanti, MI
1924
Have you ever fished with an old bait caster reel? Or, in that matter, even a new one? Ever have a problem with “bird nests”? Was it easier to cast heavy plugs or light tackle? You are not alone if you said the heavier the bait, the easier and further you could cast it.
In the 1920s, reels were not advanced like they are today and nor was the fishing line. Light tackle was virtually impossible to cast. However, H. Moore had the answer.
Moore began manufacturing a bait that was “guaranteed to carry 20 to 30 feet further than any other bait” on the market. It was available in one color scheme, yellow with a black head, and cost $1.00. It was the Moore’s Yellow Plug (nice name, huh?).
How were you able to cast this plug so far? Easy. The design featured a heavy metal head which allowed you to cast it easier and further. Brilliant! Of course, this weighted head also caused it to sink like a rock!
This lure was sold in a box with a bright yellow picture of the lure on it. These boxes are extremely rare (and the plug isn’t common either). However, be warned that I have seen several reproduction tins of its box cover for sale lately. These are NOT old, but new reproductions.
