Two brothers, Gary and Bill Storm, had an idea for a new type of fishing lure that would act as a “chugger” and a “swimmer” when retrieved. They decided to call this lure the Glop and nicknamed it the “Meanest Lure Made”. Production of this lure began in their garage.
However, coming out with a new radical looking fishing lure from a company that nobody ever heard of did not work out as well as the brothers expected. Also, the lure sold for $2.00 when most lures that were proven fish catchers sold for $1.35. The Glop just never caught on with anglers and soon the brothers found their fledgling company in trouble.
Then the brothers had a revelation. All the best selling were shaped like a minnow, but bass like to feed on shad…so they invented the “Thinfin”, the “Hot’ n’ Tot”, and the “Wiggle Wart”. These baits were so popular that the business grew and a third brother, Richard, joined the company. Storm is now one of the top lure makers in the nation and millions of their baits have been sold.
But, what about the Glop? The Glop still was a “flop” and only sold about 8,000 baits in total. However, due to its low volume, it is now sought after by many collectors. In fact, this bait can sell for $50 each or more at the time this article was written. And, is it really a “flop” when it was the start of a huge and successful fishing lure enterprise? I think not.
Besides, how can a bait born in 1964 be all that bad when one certain individual also calls that year his birthdate!!
